Hello and welcome to the 86th episode of The Spark & The Art creativity podcast. Thank you for subscribing to our weekly podcast, where we alternate between interviews with creative folks from all different career levels and insight and inspiration episodes. All with the intention you’ll get the inspiration you need to get your creative projects started and, more importantly, finished.
I’m your host Tucker and this week is an interview with vocalist Deanne Matley. Deanne has been singing since high school when she joined the jazz choir but didn’t pursue a professional career in music until more than 10 years later. In the mean time she travelled, went to school for business and got a full time job. If this was a feel-good movie the plot would be that she just walked into her bosses office and quit then went on to be a successful singer and won a Grammy. The truth is once she decided to pursue a career she started saving money and made a transition plan. Best of all she executed her plan and now makes a living at music. Not only is she making a living but she is giving back to the music community in the form of organizing a listening room series here in Calgary where she showcases local talent. Plus she also has a grant that she funds, through the Calgary Arts Academy, that allows kids who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford music lessons to learn music.
Stick around after the episode to hear not one but two songs. Okay it’s one song but you get to hear two versions of it. The song is called Almost In Love and you’ll hear my version from my five-song EP entitled Born To The World followed by Deanne’s version of the song from her album Stealin’ Blue. This is the song that gave me the awkward moment with Deanne’s mom where I tried to compliment Deanne and deflect a compliment from me but just came off like a jerk in the process. (You’ll hear all about it in the show)
So, all-in-all another awesome talk that I’m sure you’ll enjoy too, here is vocalist Deanne Matley.

Do you know someone who feels a little less than happy in their current position and is looking to do something more creative as a career. If you think Deanne’s thoughts being a creative person as a business might help them move toward that dream then please share this episode with them. The easiest way to share it is to send them the url TheSparkAndTheArt.com/85.
The easiest way to make me like you is to leave an honest rating and review for the show on iTunes. Okay that’s not the easiest way that just involves handing me a piece of chocolate and we’re friends forever. (just not orange or coffee chocolate. gross.) But iTunes reviews are a good start. Simply follow the url TheSparkAndTheArt.com/itunes and you should be taken right to the show page.
Or if you don’t want to write a review and you just want to tel me directly how great I am or that you disagree with something I said then please write something down and send it to @sparkartpodcast on twitter
And again don’t forget to stick around after the doot-doot-doot-doot-doot to hear Almost In Love in two different versions.
Thanks for listening and remember: you won’t get the art without the work and you won’t do the work without the spark.
